Abstract
Collection consists of a scrapbook containing genealogical information and newspaper clippings regarding the Knott family, their businesses, and other prominent Portland citizens. Andrew J. Knott (1834-1900) and Levi Knott (1832-1887) came to Oregon in 1850 and 1851. They ran the Stark Street ferry starting in 1861, and Andrew J. Knott represented Multnomah County in the state Legislature.

Abstract
James B. Stephens (1806-1889) was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In 1844, he traveled overland to Oregon. Settling first in Oregon City, he came to the new town of Portland in 1845. He operated the horse-powered Stark Street Ferry and laid out the townsite of East Portland. Collection includes a manuscript bond of James Bowles Stephens and Gideon Tibbetts, August 30, 1852, for Stephens to keep a ferry across the Willamette River opposite Portland; manuscript articles of agreement...
