Atiyeh was an Oregon state representative from 1959 to 1964, an Oregon state senator from 1965 to 1979, and Oregon governor from 1979 to 1987.

Jay Bowerman (1876-1957) was a Republican attorney, Oregon state representative for Gilliam County, and acting governor of Oregon, 1910-1911. Papers include correspondence regarding his activities in support of Republican candidates, his law practice and family; correspondence and research notes for a proposed history of eastern Oregon bench and bar; newspaper clippings and political ephemera regarding campaigns; and a scrapbook regarding the 1909 Oregon Legislature.
