Acevedo was born in Venezuela, and his family opposed Hugo Chávez's government. He fled Venezuela in 2014, and he applied for asylum in the United States while studying in Portland, Oregon, on a student visa.

Oral history interview with Nabin Dhimal conducted by Sankar Raman on May 19, 2018, for The Immigrant Story. Dhimal was the child of Bhutanese refugees, and he was born and grew up in camps in Nepal. His family was approved for resettlement in the United States in 2008 and immigrated to Portland, Oregon, where Dhimal attended Portland State University.

Oral history interview with Ruben Estrada-Herrera conducted by Sankar Raman on February 15, 2018, for The Immigrant Story. Estrada-Herrera immigrated with his family to the United States from Cuba in 2011, and he studied bio-medical engineering at Warner Pacific University.

Oral history interview with Abel F. Getachew conducted by Sankar Raman and Gina Ruggeri on June 11, 2018, for The Immigrant Story. Getachew immigrated to the United States from Ethiopia in 2012, and founded an organization, Hope for a Bright Future, to support immigrant and refugee students.
