James Winston letter to Louis Dement
Manuscript letter from James Winston to his grandson, Louis Dement, written in Chinook Jargon. Winston (1823-1892) arrived in Oregon City from Richmond, Virginia, in 1846 at age 21. He married Mary Johnson, daughter of Rev. Hezekiah Johnson, a pioneer Baptist missionary of 1845.

Boise, and Benjamin F. Mulkey; speeches regarding initiative and referendum; and ephemera.
