Abstract Abraham Walter Lafferty (1875-1964) practiced law in Portland and was elected as a Republican to the sixty-second and sixty-third Congresses (March 4, 1911-March 3, 1915). He moved to New York City in 1919 and continued the practice of law there until 1933. He returned to Portland and later unsuccessfully ran for political office several times. Abstract The Velde Committee, or Committee on Un-American Activities, met in Portland, Oregon, in June 1954 to investigate the political affiliations of three Reed College professors, who refused to answer questions put to them by the committee.
