Small collection of materials related to the military service of Ross E. Read of Portland, Oregon, in Company D of the 1st U.S. Engineers during World War I. The bulk of the collection consists of documents and correspondence regarding citations and awards bestowed on Read for heroism during combat in Cantigny, France, in May 1918, and a book, published circa 1918, documenting the operations of the 1st U.S. Engineers during the war.

Kirby Stewart Ross, also known as Kirby G. Ross, served in the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War I, and was awarded a Silver Star. Collection includes two diaries regarding his military training in Oregon and his combat experiences in France; certificates from the French government for his military service; and correspondence regarding his awards.
