Abstract

Reminiscences of landscape architect and planner Jurgen A. Hess (born 1941) about implementation of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Act, as well as materials relating to opposition to the act, including a document by Lex Loeb. Hess worked for the U.S. Forest Service for more than 30 years, and was the service's planning director for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Oral history interview with Chuck Williams, conducted by Clark Hansen in three sessions, from January 22, 1999, to March 17, 1999, as part of the Columbia River Dissenters Oral History Series. Williams discusses his involvement with the campaign to designate the Columbia River Gorge as a National Scenic Area, and explains why he now feels that the scenic area designation is inadequate.
