James H. McMillen (1823-1913) was an Oregon pioneer of 1845, volunteer in the Cayuse Indian war, and resident of Washington County, Oregon. Collection consists of McMillen's manuscript reminiscences, 1910-1911, in the form of a letter to George Himes, regarding his journey to Oregon in 1845; his acquaintance with John McLoughlin and Peter Skene Ogden; and his recollections of the Whitman killings, Cayuse Indian War, and early Portland, Oregon.

Papers of Robert Newell (1807-1869), a trapper, emigrant to Oregon, and Indian agent. Includes a typescript copy of Newell's diary of an 1868 voyage from Portland, Oregon, to Washington, D.C., with Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) leaders; handwritten copies of letters regarding William Gray's "History of Oregon"; and Newell's account of the 1843 meeting at Champoeg, which formed the provisional government of the Oregon Territory. Only a small number of the items are original documents.

An octogenarian's childhood on the western frontier

Collection consists of Elizabeth Reed Brent's reminiscences of her childhood in Picard, California, now called Dorris, from the late 1890s to 1906. Brent's family moved from Iowa to Keno, Oregon, in 1891, and she was born in Keno in 1895. From there, the family moved to Picard and later to Chico, California.
