Aguilar is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who came to the United States with her family when she was 5. She is a recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and earned a Ph.D. at the University of California Merced.

Neri-Wong came to the United States from Mexico as a child to seek treatment for a blood disorder. She later became a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipient.
