Abstract

Papers of Lewis A. McArthur (1883-1951) and his family, particularly papers relating to research on Oregon place names. McArthur was a historian who published Oregon Geographic Names in 1928. He published a second edition of the work in 1944, and had completed most of the work for the third edition before his death.

McArthur (1917-2018) published the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh editions of Oregon Geographic Names, and was active in historic preservation.

Records of the Oregon Geographic Names Board compiled by Thomas C. Stacer (1917-1988). Stacer was the chief counsel for the Oregon State Board of Forestry, and was a member of the Oregon Geographic Names Board, which supervises the naming and renaming of geographic features within Oregon.
