Abstract Letterpress copybook of Jacob Merriman, captain of the merchant vessel Henry Failing, containing copies of approximately 400 letters sent by Merriman to his partners, including ship captain William H. Besse and merchant, banker and politician Henry Failing of Portland, Oregon. The bulk of the letters were sent from 1883 to 1894, during the time the ship carried such cargoes as coal, oil, wheat, and tea. Abstract

Photograph album and several loose photographs depicting building demolition by the Shipyard Wood Company, owned by Fred G. Leary and W. C. Leary. The photographs primarily depict demolition of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem after it was destroyed by fire in 1935. Also depicted is wrecking of various buildings in Portland. In addition to photographs, the album contains newspaper clippings about the company's projects.

Shively.

Abstract

Two ledgers for M & A Shogren, a dressmaking business in Portland, Oregon, and personal papers of May E. Shogren (1861-1928), who operated the business with her younger sister, Anne H. Shogren (1868-1934). The personal papers consist of a microfilm copy of a diary kept by May Shogren and an exercise notebook containing essays about literature. The Shogren sisters operated their business from the 1890s through the 1910s, specializing in high-fashion custom dresses.

Jessie May Short (1873-1947) was an assistant professor of mathematics at Reed College from 1920 to 1939. She also taught at Vanport College, served on the Portland School Board, and during the war years, worked with the Kaiser shipyards as an engineer. Collection includes correspondence, reports, articles, and miscellaneous documents regarding housing issues, primarily in Portland, Oregon, circa 1920-1942.

Robert Valentine Short papers

Abstract

Robert Valentine Short (1823-1908) was a pioneer of 1847. He was a member of the 1851 Constitutional Convention and in 1888 was elected to the Oregon Legislature from Clackamas County. He also studied surveying and was responsible for surveying the town of Portland in 1850. Collection includes diaries, correspondence, scrapbook, survey and field notes; and papers relating to donation land claims and property in Yamhill, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties.

Papers of Robert Shortess (1797-1878), an early emigrant to Oregon. Papers consist of correspondence, reports, and certificates relating to Shortess's work as an Indian sub-agent, his guardianship of Grace Tibbets and John Tibbets, and his work as a school district clerk; financial and property records; family correspondence; and a photostatic reproduction of the marriage certificate of Shortess's daughter, Susan Shortess (later Susan Walkley).
