Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 24 photographs from the Catholic Sentinel newspaper in Portland, Oregon, that date from approximately 1963 to 2003. Fourteen black-and-white photographs depict Pope John Paul II, Bishop Paul Waldschmidt, and Portland archbishops William J. Levada, Edwin O’Hara, Francis George, Cornelius Power, Robert J. Dwyer, and Edward Howard. Ten color snapshots depict a 2003 protest in Portland against the Iraq War. The collection also contains a 68-page publication commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Portland in 1996.

The photographs are uncredited except for one print attributed to Phil Muthersbaugh, staff photographer at the Catholic Sentinel, and one print attributed to Jim Vincent, a staff photographer at the Oregonian.

Historical Note

The Catholic Sentinel newspaper was an official publication of the Archdiocese of Portland, and one of the longest-running Catholic newspapers in the United States. The Sentinel began publication in 1870 and ran until October 1, 2022, when both the Sentinel and its Spanish-language version, El Centinela, were discontinued.

Abstract

Small collection of 24 photographs and a commemorative publication from the Catholic Sentinel, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon. The photographs date from approximately 1963 to 2003; they depict Portland archbishops and a protest against the Iraq War in 2003.
