Scope and Contents

Collection consists of 45 black-and-white photographs of politicians campaigning in Oregon. The photographs were taken and collected by photographer Richard Stefani from approximately 1966 to 1972. Photographs depict Robert F. Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy in Portland during the 1968 presidential primaries, and George McGovern and Richard Nixon in Portland during the 1972 presidential race. Two photographs of Robert F. Kennedy are attributed to photographer Bill Anderson, and two photographs of George McGovern are attributed to photographer Dan Dinges. Also included in the collection is one matted print of Oregon Governor Tom McCall taken by Stefani in 1970. The print bears McCall’s autograph and Stefani's artist signature.

Biographical Note

Richard Stefani was born in 1933 and grew up in Canby, Oregon. In 1962, Stefani left his family’s lumber business to pursue his interest in photography. After managing Hausen Photography in Woodburn, Oregon, from 1962 to 1967, he purchased the business in 1967 and renamed it Stefani Photography. In 1973, Stefani moved his studio to Salem, where he lived and worked until his death in 2022.
