Daguerreotype portrait of Hiram and Hannah Smith, taken in approximately 1855. The daguerreotype is housed in a wood and embossed leather half-case. The case is missing its lid. A hand-written label adhered to the back of the case reads, “Aunt Hannah and Uncle Hiram Smith.”

Biographical Note

Hiram Smith (1810-1870) and his wife, Hannah Moore Smith (1814-1896), emigrated to Portland, Oregon, in 1851. They established general stores in Oregon City and Portland, then purchased more than 3,000 acres of land, primarily in the area that would become Fairview. In 1889, Hannah Smith laid out the Fairview townsite, with land designated for schools and churches. She lived in Portland until her death.

Abstract

Collection consists of one daguerreotype portrait of spouses Hiram Smith and Hannah Smith, taken in approximately 1855. The Smiths came to Portland, Oregon, in 1851, and later purchased the land that would become Fairview, Oregon. Hannah Smith laid out the Fairview townsite in 1889.
