Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 19 glass negatives and 17 nitrate film negatives depicting the southern Oregon coast, taken by James Reuben Croxall. The images show coastal scenes in the Bandon, Gold Beach, and Port Orford areas, with many depicting sea stacks. Of particular note are photographs of Bandon prior to the 1936 fire that destroyed much of the town.

Biographical Note

James Reuben Croxall was born July 3, 1876, in New Albany, Indiana. He was a clerk at the New Albany post office and worked for the Hammersmith Transfer and Storage Company before moving to Ashland, Oregon, around 1910. There he worked as a fruit grower until 1916, when he opened the Neptune photography studio in Bandon. He married Mayne Isabelle Reno in 1899, and they had four children. Croxall died on November 8, 1933.

Abstract

Collection consists of glass and nitrate negatives depicting Bandon, Oregon, and the southern Oregon coast, taken by southern Oregon photographer James Reuben Croxall (1876-1933), who operated the Neptune photography studio in Bandon.

Researcher access to negatives in the collection is limited for preservation purposes. To inquire about viewing the negatives, contact library staff. Fees may apply.

Gift of Alan Mitchell, June 2025 (RL2025-065).

Processing Information

Annotations from the original negative sleeves were transferred to archival negative sleeves during collection processing. It is unclear whether the information on the original sleeves was added by the photographer or from research conducted by a former owner of the negatives prior to their donation to the Oregon Historical Society Research Library.
