Audio recording of Gearhart Heritage Committee meeting

 Collection
Identifier: SR 9680

Scope and Contents

Audio recording of a Gearhart Heritage Committee meeting held on July 20, 1978, at the Gearhart City Hall in Gearhart, Oregon. Most of the speakers are identified by first name only, and the person who recorded the meeting is unidentified. Chef and author James Beard and Bill Byrd were invited as guest speakers. The spelling of Byrd’s surname is inferred based on the audio recording.

During the meeting, the members of the Gearhart Heritage Committee share their memories of early 20th-century Gearhart. Beard recounts his childhood memories of summers he spent in Gearhart. Byrd discusses work by the city of Gearhart to create a comprehensive plan for its future growth, as required by the state of Oregon.

Historical note

The Gearhart Heritage Committee was formed by the Gearhart City Council in early 1978 to help the city meet historic preservation requirements of Oregon's land-use planning law. Tasks for the committee included compiling a history of Gearhart; identifying sites of importance to Native peoples; and taking an inventory of sites of potential historic significance to the community. The committee's early officers included Edna Ellen Bell, Bunny Doar, Buel Ward, and Doris Ferguson.
