Historical Note

Johnson Creek runs through southeast Portland, Oregon, and for much of the 20th century has been subject to seasonal flooding and industrial pollution. In the 1930s, Works Progress Administration projects, such as rip-rapping the streambed with rocks and creating canals, were intended to control flooding on the creek. The bridge designs in this collection were part of this New Deal era of public infrastructure projects.
