Indian training schools photographic collection
Scope and Contents
Small collection of 14 card photographs, most relating to two Indian boarding schools. The bulk of the photographs were taken by J. N. Choate, and consist of group portraits of children at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, as well as some scenes that show buildings and grounds. Many of these images have handwritten notes on the back that provide identifications of the students, or other information. The collection also includes two group portraits by the Davidson Studio of students at the Indian Training School in Forest Grove, Oregon. Other images in the collection are a studio portrait of a Native man identified as "Spotted Tail, Sioux chief"; and a photograph by Thomas Eaton, Jr., that depicts Native people in Metlakatla, Alaska, at a July 4 celebration in 1897, according to a handwritten note.
