Historical Note

Arlington is a town in Gilliam County, Oregon, located along the Columbia River about 50 miles east of The Dalles. The town was platted in 1882 and initially named Alkali before changing to Arlington in 1885. It was the county seat for Gilliam County until 1890, when voters chose to move the seat to Condon. In the 1960s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers relocated much of the town to higher ground when the John Day Dam was constructed, and a new business district was built on compacted fill on top of the town's original location. In 2020, the town's population was 628.
