Historical Note
Pioneer Courthouse Square is a one-block, open-air outdoor space in downtown Portland, Oregon. The square was the site of a public school from 1858 until 1883, and then the site of the Portland Hotel from 1890 until 1951. After the hotel's demolition, the department store Meier & Frank used the space as a parking lot. In 1970, Meier & Frank requested a permit to erect a 12-story parking structure at the site. City officials tabled the request, and in 1974 decided that the site should be converted to a public space. A team led by Portland architect Willard K. Martin (1930-1985) won the design competition for the space. The square was dedicated on April 6, 1984.
