This oral history interview with Anna L. Merchant was conducted by Don Ellis and Donna Clark at Merchant’s home in Culver, Oregon, on December 8, 1981. In addition to the audio recording, a transcript of the interview is available. In this interview, Merchant discusses her family background and early life on a homestead in the Culver area, including her education. She speaks extensively about the area as it was in the early 20th century, discussing the buildings, businesses, and people. She also briefly talks about running a general merchandise store in Culver with her husband, William V. Merchant.

Biographical note

Anna Lee Merchant, nee Martin, was born in Newark, Missouri, in 1897. In 1904, she moved with her family to Washington state; two years later, the family moved again, to Culver, Oregon. In 1914, Anna Martin married William Vern Merchant.They had three children and ran the Culver Market. Anna L. Merchant died in 1991.
