Scope and Contents

Album compiled by an unknown person, containing miscellaneous photographs, postcards, and ephemera, as well as several negatives. Many of the items in the album were cut from the pages of other albums or scrapbooks, and some include notes that were handwritten on the pages of the albums from which they were removed. The album includes images relating to people, places, and events in locations including Oregon, New York, Illinois, California, and Montana.

Among the materials are: a photograph of Oregon's winter sports queen and her court with actor Spencer Tracy on set in Hollywood, California, March 1939; a Christmas photo postcard from the Lowndes family (Joe H., Joe M., and Effie D.); three photographs from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, July 1940; a campaign card for Richard Covelle for state representative; a business card for Fred C. Godley, pianos and organs, Salem, Oregon; a photograph of the interior of the PhotoReflex studio; various portraits of unidentified individuals and groups, including many children; images of New York City in the early 1930s; images from the University of Oregon, circa 1914; group of "Woodmen" in uniform, pictured on a trip to Buffalo, New York, 1911; postcards of San Francisco with diary entries, 1939; photographs of a group of men on Glen Mountain, Montana, in the 1910s; a photograph labeled "Bryan Homestead," Withersfield, Illinois, and another labeled "Bryan residence," Pasadena, California; a vaudeville advertisement, with Milton Berle; and a photograph of a group of boys in downtown Portland, circa 1907.

Custodial History

The album was purchased at an estate sale in Portland, Oregon, during the 1970s, before being donated to the Oregon Historical Society Research Library in 2011.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Gift of Michael Hoeye, September 2011 (Lib. Acc. 27431).

Processing Information

Album was titled "Portland, Oregon photograph album" prior to March 2024. During initial processing, the album was disassembled and the album cover was discarded due to mold; a photocopy of the original cover is included in the collection.
