Oral history interview with Pietro Belluschi
Scope and Contents
This oral history interview with Pietro Belluschi was conducted by Oregon photographer Marian W. Kolisch in two sessions, on March 8, 1976, and January 25, 1988. The interview was part of a series conducted by Kolisch to accompany portraits of Oregon artists, businesspeople, and politicians.
In the first interview session, conducted on March 8, 1976, Belluschi discusses the architecture projects he was focused on at the time of the interview, including his plans to travel to and design buildings in Saudi Arabia. He briefly talks about his experience as a professor of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also speaks about incorporating artistic elements into his architectural designs. He discusses his family background and early life in Ancona, Italy, talks about studying engineering at the University of Rome and Cornell University, and describes how he became an architect in Portland, Oregon, during the Depression. He speaks about buildings he designed in Oregon, about architects he admires, and about designing houses to fit the people who will use them.
In the second interview session, conducted on January 25, 1988, Belluschi discusses how he handles his workload as an architect differently during his older age. He speaks about his past travels to Saudi Arabia, and discusses the architectural style popular in Saudi Arabia in the 1980s. He speaks further about the importance of incorporating artistic elements into his architectural designs, and shares his thoughts about what makes some architectural designs timeless. He closes the interview by speaking further about designing buildings to match the character of the people who will use them.
