Biographical note

Quincy Scott (1882-1965) and Ella Beck Allen (1882-1971) married in 1907, and, for their honeymoon, took a trip of over 2,000 miles on horseback from Minnesota to Washington state. They lived in Chicago, Illinois; New York, New York; Seattle, Washington; and Montana before moving to Portland in 1931. Quincy Scott served in World War I, and later was the editorial cartoonist for the Oregonian newspaper in Portland for 18 years, from 1931-1949. Ella Allen Scott, also an artist, worked in commercial art for a time, particularly book and magazine illustration, and later exhibited and sold paintings. During the time the Scotts lived in Montana, she was the dean of women at the University of Montana. After Quincy Scott retired from the Oregonian, the Scotts moved to Neahkahnie. Quincy Scott was killed in an automobile accident in 1965, and Ella Allen Scott subsequently moved back to Portland, where she lived for the rest of her life.
