Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a photocopy of a draft course catalog for the National College of Naturopathic Medicine for the years 1956 through 1958. There are multiple handwritten edits throughout the document. The catalog includes an explanatory note about naturopathy, a roster of the college's board and faculty, a calendar for the 1956-1957 academic year, information about admission and tuition, and lists of courses and required textbooks.

Administrative History

The National College of Naturopathic Medicine was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1956, offering four-year courses for a degree of doctor of naturopathy, a field of alternative medicine. Initially located at 2150 SE Hawthorne Boulevard, it later relocated to 510 SW 3rd Avenue and then to 11231 SE Market Street. In 2006, it changed its name to the National College of Natural Medicine, and by 2016 was named the National University of Natural Medicine. As of 2009, it was one of four accredited naturopathic schools in the United States.
