Scope and Contents

Collection consists of two photograph albums relating to Jude Reiter and the Reiter family, as well as a small number of loose photographs from the albums. One album (Album 242) contains 786 black and white snapshots and studio portraits, 1901-1912, relating to Reiter's education at Allegheny Preparatory School and Pennsylvania State College, including men's and women's sports teams, Kappa Sigma fraternity, and other social activities, as well as images of family and friends. This album also includes views of landscapes, logging, and mining in Minnesota, Alaska, Colorado and Oregon. Some photographs have handwritten captions, but most people are identified by first name only, or are unidentified. The second album (Album 243) includes 437 black and white photographs and 12 loose images, 1911-1917, largely depicting social life and recreation. Scenes and places include Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; New York City; friends in Atlantic City, New Jersey; a trip with friends to the Tacoma National Forest, including swimming, camping, and climbing trees; the Columbia River Gorge; and Jude Reiter in a World War I uniform. Some pages have handwritten captions; people depicted in the album are unidentified, but pictured among them is Jude Reiter's wife, Olive Reiter.

Biographical note

C. Gill "Jude" Reiter (1888-1955) was a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a graduate of Allegheny Prep School and Pennsylvania State College, and a veteran of World War I. In 1929, he became the first city manager of Bend, Oregon. He was also city manager for Albany, Coos Bay, and Hillsboro, Oregon.

Custodial History

The albums in this collection, as well as other papers and photographs relating to Jude Reiter and the Reiter family, were purchased from an antique store, and were later donated to Oregon Historical Society Research Library.
