Scope and Contents

Oral history interview with Petrona Dominguez Francisco, conducted by Sankar Raman, Nancy Dollahite, and Hannah Kendall on March 18, 2020. The interview was recorded for The Immigrant Story, an organization that documents and archives the stories of immigrants and refugees in the United States. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the interview was conducted using Zoom video conferencing software; only an audio recording of the interview is held by the Oregon Historical Society Research Library.

In this interview, Dominguez Francisco discusses her family background and early life in Guatemala, and shares the reasons her family moved to Forest Grove, Oregon, in 2001. She shares her memories of her journey to the United States. She discusses her early life and education in Forest Grove, including learning English and her experience as a Latine immigrant in a predominantly white area. She talks about learning that she was an undocumented immigrant as a teenager, and describes how the Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals program benefited her. She talks about studying social work at Portland Community College and at Portland State University, and discusses her involvement with the Oregon Leadership Institute. She speaks about her activism for immigrant rights, shares her feelings about her identity as an undocumented immigrant, and describes her arrest for civil disobedience. She closes the interview by talking about her work with Adelante Mujeres, an organization that provides services to immigrant Latine women in Oregon, and about her plans for the future.

Biographical note

Petrona Dominguez Francisco was born in Soloma Huehuetenango, Guatemala, in 1996. In 2001, she and her family came to Forest Grove, Oregon, as undocumented immigrants. Dominguez Francisco later became a beneficiary of the Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which provides temporary protection from deportation to undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. She attended Portland Community College, and graduated from Portland State University with a bachelor's degree in social work in 2021. She was active with the Oregon Leadership Institute, and participated in protests and rallies for immigrant rights.
