Engravings from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper
Scope and Contents
Engravings, primarily depicting Oregon scenes and Native people, that were excised from issues of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Engravings removed from the July 27, 1878, issue depict an attack by a party of Umatilla people on a party of the Snake people, and Native people receiving supplies at a government agency. A page from the August 28, 1880, issue features an article titled "Oregon and Its Attractions," with engravings of scenes in Portland and on the Columbia River. The front page of a July 30, 1887, issue features one engraving of Mount Hood and another of people ascending the mountain. A page of hand-colored engravings from a December 24, 1887, supplement depicts scenes, mostly landscapes, in Northern California and Southern Oregon. The collection also includes three excised engravings in a scrapbook. Two are duplicates of the loose excised engravings from the July 27, 1878, issue, depicting Native people; the third, from the February 23, 1878, issue, shows Nez Perce prisoners playing cards at a temporary village in Kansas. Engravings in the collection were based on photographs by E. Conklin, Howard C. Tibbitts, and O. C. Yocum, and on sketches by F. J. Howell and an unidentified Army officer.
