Engravings from the Illustrated London News
Scope and Contents
Collection consists of engravings excised from the January 24, 1852, and February 17, 1966, issues of the Illustrated London News. The 1852 engraving is hand-colored; a caption reads: "The Californian gold district.-Kanaha Bar, on a tributary of the Sacramento, where gold was first found.-Miners working in the bed of the American River." The 1866 illustrations, both on the same page, are black and white; one depicts a train crossing a trestle in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, and the other shows a hunter in the forest, looking toward Mount St. Helens and the Columbia River in the distance. Collection also includes a second copy of the Cascade Mountains engraving.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The engravings from the 1852 issue were purchased from the Old Print Shop, November 1988, and the gift of David and Mary Mullen, May 2012 (Lib. Acc. 27623).
