Great Northern Railroad photograph album
Scope and Contents
One album containing 36 black and white photographs, 1897-1899, taken during construction of the Cascade Tunnel in Washington state by the Great Northern Railway. Many of the photographs depict scenes of or near the West Portal of the tunnel. These include views of switchbacks; the hospital, engineers' quarters, dining hall, and other buildings at the work camp, and Tye Creek. The album also includes individual and group photographs of people, of whom only M. E. Reed is identified, as well as a photograph of people looking at a tipped locomotive with cables attached to it, perhaps in the process of being righted. The album pages have handwritten captions and dates, including for many photographs that are now missing from the album.
