Florence Bynon reminiscences and family photographs

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 2824

Scope and Contents

Collection consists of two sets of reminiscences by Florence Bynon (nee Hofer) about childhood summers spent at a cottage on Yaquina Bay near Newport, Oregon, as well as six loose family photographs. The materials were received with a flat-iron skiff that was donated to the Oregon Historical Society Museum in 1988. One set of reminiscences, a photocopied typescript titled "Pebbles: Picked up on the Beach at Newport, Ore." was written by Bynon in 1907, when she was about 12 years old, and describes the family's activities at the cottage during the summer of that year; these reminiscences are misattributed to Bynon's father, Colonel Ernst Hofer, in a handwritten note on the cover page. The second set of reminiscences, a typescript titled "When Time Seemed to Pause" was written by Hofer for her daughter, Ailsa Bloodworth, in 1978, and includes original photographs and picture postcards. These reminiscences describe the cottage at Yaquina Bay and its surroundings, as well as the family's social and recreational activities there over the years, foods they ate, and their friends. The loose photographs in the collection, dating from circa 1912 to circa 1917, depict Bynon and other family members, most unidentified, during outdoor activities, including boating on the Willamette River, swimming in the Yaquina River, and picnicking.
