Oral history interview with Florence I. Budlong
Scope and Contents
This oral history interview with Florence I. Budlong was conducted by Roberta Watts at Budlong’s home in Portland, Oregon, on February 3, 1978, as part of the Oregon Historical Society Research Library’s oral history program.
In this interview, Budlong discusses her involvement in the trucking industry from 1942 to 1969. She talks about the changes in trucking regulations over the 20th century, and about how those rules are enforced. She describes her work publishing updated tariff rates for trucking companies in Oregon. She also discusses the role of the Oregon Public Utilities Commission in developing trucking regulations. She talks about teaching English as a second language through her church after her retirement in 1969. She closes the interview by listing some of the trucking companies she worked with.

Biographical note
Florence Irene Budlong, nee Englin, was born in North Dakota in 1900. When she was a teenager, she moved with her mother to Portland, Oregon. In 1921, she married Nihl Arlington Budlong; they later had two children. In 1942, she began working for a company in Portland that published tariff rates for trucking companies in Oregon. After she retired in 1969, she taught English as a second language through her church. She died in 1994.
