Scope and Contents

This oral history interview with second cousins Evelyn B. Shirk and Mary C. Hull (also known as Ma’Carry W. Hull) was conducted by Charles Digregorio at the Oregon Historical Society in Portland, Oregon, on April 21, 1976, as part of the oral history program at the society’s research library. Henry C. C. Stevens was also present and occasionally contributed to the interview. In addition to the audio recording of the interview, a transcript is available.

In this interview, Shirk and Hull speak at length about their family background, including the Beebe, Wilson, Webster, and Couch families. They also talk about how the role of women in society changed over the 20th century. They discuss how they are related, and describe their shared family traits. They talk about their early lives in Portland, including their social lives, their recreational activities, and their family friends.

Biographical note

Evelyn Beebe Shirk, nee Evelyn Wilson Beebe, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1913. In 1938, she and Frank James Billington were married; they later had one child. In 1953, she remarried to Stanley Hall Shirk. She died in 2009.

Biographical note

Mary Caroline Hull, nee Webster, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1917. In 1942, she and Robert S. Hull were married. During her life, she was commonly known as Ma'Carry Webster Hull or Ma'Carry W. Hull. She died in 2003.
