Collection consists of materials relating to a 1957 trip by Oregon Journal reporter Rolla J. Crick to Antarctica, dubbed "Operation Deep Freeze III." Included are prints of digitized photographs with captions, 1957; photocopy newspaper articles and a flier for a speech regarding the trip; and reports and correspondence.

Biographical note

Rolla Joe "Bud" Crick was born in 1918 in Twin Falls, Idaho, and was raised in Southern California. He later moved to Oregon, where he held a variety of occupations, including as a shipwright, a chicken rancher and a freelance journalist. During World War II, Crick served in the Pacific theater as a newswriter and combat correspondent. After the war, Crick returned to Oregon, where he became a reporter for the Oregon Journal newspaper and later for the Oregonian. Some of Crick's most notable stories were his coverage of the Vanport Flood in 1948, a city-wide crackdown on illegal abortion operations in the Portland area in 1951, an expedition to Antarctica in 1957 during which he became the first journalist to reach the South Pole, and his coverage of the Vietnam War. Crick retired in 1989. He died in 2013.
