Administrative history

The Cloud Cap Inn was a small resort hotel built on the northeast slope of Mount Hood in Oregon in 1889. Two years earlier, a group of Portlanders had financed the building of a road to the area, and they later formed the Mount Hood Trail and Wagon Road Company. The company was later bought by Portland banker William Mead Ladd and writer Charles Erskine Scott Wood. The inn was designed by noted Portland architect William H. Whidden and consisted of a one-story C-shaped structure and a number of outbuildings. It quickly became a destination for affluent vacationers, although it declined in popularity in the 1930s. In the early 1920s, the owners made plans for an expanded facility designed by A. E. Doyle, but the plan was never carried out. In 1940, the inn was sold to the U.S. Forest Service, and in the 1950s, the Crag Rats, a mountain-rescue organization, contracted to maintain and use the former inn as its base.
