Scope and Contents
This oral history interview with Louise H. Martin was conducted by Ruth M. Powers in Vancouver, Washington, on July 21, 1976, as part of the Oregon Historical Society Research Library’s oral history program. Charles Digregorio was also present.
In this interview, Martin discusses her family background and early life in Alaska; Oregon City, Oregon; and Spokane, Washington. She describes visits to her relatives’ house in Oregon City, which is now known as the William L. Holmes House, or the Rose Farm.

Biographical note
Louise Holmes Martin, nee Francis Louisa Holmes, was born in De Sonet Mission, Idaho, in 1889. She spent most of her early childhood in Alaska. In 1897, her mother and brother moved to Oregon City, Oregon, and the next year she and her father joined them. Her father soon returned to Alaska. After he was lost at sea, she moved with her mother and brother to Spokane, Washington. In 1910, she and Fred H. Martin were married; they later had one child. Louise Martin had a long career as a bookkeeper, working until she was nearly 80. She died in 1976.
