Biographical note

Matthew Paul Deady, son of Daniel and Mary Ann (McSweeny) Deady, was born near Easton in Talbot County, Maryland on May 12, 1824. After growing up on family farms in Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio, he graduated from Barnesville Academy in St. Clairesville, Ohio, in 1845. He made his way to Oregon in 1849, and he taught school before serving as an Oregon territorial house representative from Lafayette. In 1853, Deady was appointed as associate justice for the Oregon Supreme Court's southwest district. In 1857, he presided over Oregon's constitutional convention. He was appointed U.S. District judge for the district of Oregon in 1859, and held this Portland-based position until his death on March 24, 1893. Deady also served on the boards of a number of civic and educational institutions, including the Library Association of Portland and the University of Oregon. He married Lucy Ann Henderson at Lafayette on June 24, 1852. They had three sons: Paul R. Deady, Edward N. Deady, and Henderson B. Deady.
