Biographical note

William Sargent Ladd (1826-1893) was a merchant and philanthropist. He arrived in Portland in 1851 and was elected mayor in 1854. He was the principal backer and promoter of many large companies, including the Oregon Steam Navigation Company, Oregon Telegraph, Oregon Central Railroad, and the Portland Hotel.
