Frederic Hague Callister, known as F. Hague Callister or Hague Callister during his life, was born in 1914 in Salem, Oregon, but grew up in Albany, Oregon. He attended the University of Oregon, where he earned degrees in business administration and economics. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he was the manager of the Bozeman, Montana Chamber of Commerce. In 1949, he contracted polio, which paralyzed his legs. That year, he moved to Portland so he could receive treatment. Callister worked in the insurance business until 1961, and then was an executive at Morden Machines Company. He was also known for his advocacy for people with disabilities. In 1966, he was named Oregon's Handicapped American of the Year; he also served on the board of the Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Oregon, and was its president in the early 1970s.

Callister married Dorothy Duncan (1918-2007) in 1942; the couple had three children. Callister lived in Wilsonville, Oregon, in his later life. He died in 1996.
