Scope and Contents

Collection consists of four prints from the Portland General Electric Company's "Life in Vanport" series, circa 1944. The front of each print features a painting made for PGE that depicts a scene in Vanport, Oregon, with a title and the text: "One of a series of impressions of Vanport, Oregon: World's largest shipbuilders' city." The back of each print features descriptive information about Vanport or PGE, as well as the following text about the "Life in Vanport" series: "Presented with the compliments of the Portland General Electric Company, which delivers the power used by Vanport's 40,000 citizens; prepared as a salute from PGE to America's fastest shipbuilders." The four prints are: "Life in Vanport: Day Nursery in a Tree-shaded Park," made from a watercolor by Charles Voorhies, depicting trees and buildings; "Life in Vanport: Waiting for the 4:40 Bus," made from an oil painting by Sergeant John W. Hatch, showing people gathered outside a station; "Life in Vanport: Sandlot Baseball in the Sunshine," made from a watercolor by Sergeant Robert Jakobsen, depicting children playing baseball on a lot between buildings and trees; and "Life in Vanport: Between-Shift Interlude," made from a watercolor by Douglas Lynch, depicting a night scene at a bus stop. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of a plan of Vanport, with a pencil mark indicating the residence of the family of Earl Carver, who donated the prints to the Oregon Historical Society Research Library.
