Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a bound volume of crayon drawings and typed poems or other short writings. All works were created by pupils at Wilkes School in Multnomah County, Oregon, though a teacher may have done the typing for the poems and writings. All written pieces list the full name and grade of the author; many, but not all, of the drawings also provide this information.

Administrative History

Wilkes School is an elementary school located on N.E. Wilkes Road, Portland, Oregon. It stands on the site of the original Wilmont School. In 1885, William G. Wilkes donated property for the school. The school's current iteration was opened in 1913 and expanded three times during the 20th century. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the school taught about 80 pupils from grades 1 to 8. Some of these pupils were the children of Japanese American farmers.
