Biographical note
John G. Tuttle was born in Maryland in about 1844 and was a self-described dairy farmer with a family consisting of his wife, Elizabeth, and six children by 1890. The four city lots that they owned in the Grant Park area of East Portland were subdivided and filled with residential homes by 1916. The brickyard operations had likely ceased well before Tuttle's death in 1899, illustrated by his estate inventory, which lists no brick manufacturing structures or equipment.
