Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 58 licenses for marriages that John Handsaker officiated in the 1870s and 1880s. These licenses are the copies that were made for Handsaker. All but three of these licenses are for marriages officiated in Lane County, Oregon; the other three licenses are for marriages officiated in Jackson County, Oregon.

Biographical Note

John Handsaker was born in 1821 in Derbyshire, England, and immigrated to the United States in 1843. After living in Illinois for three decades, in 1874 he moved to Goshen, Oregon, where he worked in merchandising, as an agent for the Oregon and California Railroad, as a postmaster, and as an express agent. He moved to Tacoma, Washington, in 1888. Handsaker was an ordained minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died in 1908.
