Administrative history

The Bethel Institute was established in Zena, Oregon, in the mid-1850s by members of the Disciples of Christ. Its name later changed to Bethel College. In 1865, it merged with Monmouth University, and the combined schools became Christian College. In 1882, Christian College became the Oregon State Normal School, focusing on teacher training. It would change names and focus several more times, becoming the Oregon Normal School, the Oregon College of Education, Western Oregon State College, and, in 1997, Western Oregon University, its current name.
