Silver Creek cash book

 Collection
Identifier: Mss 842

Scope and Contents

Bound account book with entries from December 18, 1852 to May 9, 1859, which may relate to the sawmill and flour mill operated by Buford Smith in what is now Silverton, Oregon. A handwritten inscription on the inside front cover appears to read "Silver Crick cash book By" and then lists names of at least three possible contributors to the book, but most of the names are not clearly written; one is Smith, and another may be B. G. Eberhart. Entries in the account book are written in multiple hands and in both ink and pencil; they include descriptions of hours worked by various people; document bills for goods such as lumber and flour; and include references to hauling of goods. Multiple entries relate to Buford Smith (spelled Beuford in some entries). At least one entry refers to Oregon City, and some pages are filled with calculations.
