Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection consists of an original manuscript and a typescript copy of a narrative by Tyler Woodward, titled "Forty-Five Years on the Pacific Coast," circa 1905. The original narrative is handwritten in three paper tablets, in which Woodward describes his life on the Pacific coast, including an ocean voyage from New York to California; employment in Marysville, California, and the Nevada mines; description of events in real estate; and his railroad career in Oregon. The collection also includes an original typescript and a typescript copy of an 1895 autobiographical sketch.

Biographical note

Tyler Woodward was born in Hartland, Vermont, in 1835. In 1860, he traveled across the Isthmus of Panama to California, where he found a job clerking in his brother's hotel in Marysville. Over the next several years, he moved to Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho, before setting up a trading post in Hell Gate Valley, Montana (near modern Missoula). In 1870, he came to Portland, Oregon, where he joined the Parrish & Atkinson real estate firm. In 1873, he moved to Walla Walla, where he joined Dr. D.S. Baker in building a railroad line to Wallula. In 1882, he became involved in the construction of a streetcar system in Portland; he later became president of the City and Suburban Railway. He was also president of the U.S. National Bank, a Multnomah County commissioner, and a member of the Portland city council. In 1872, he married Mary J. Ross. They had one daughter, Mayanna. Woodward died in 1914.

The collection also includes an original typescript and a typescript copy of an 1895 autobiographical sketch. Woodward (1835-1914) was born in Vermont and emigrated to the West in 1860, first living in California and later in Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. He was involved in construction of a streetcar system in Portland and was also president of the U.S. National Bank, a Multnomah County commissioner, and a member of the Portland city council.
