Biographical note
Stephen Samuel Wise was born in Budapest in 1874. He was one of the foremost leaders of Zionism and Reform Judaism. He was active in the American Jewish Congress, the World Jewish Congress, and the Zionist Organization of America. He served as a rabbi in New York City from 1893 to 1900. He moved to Portland, Oregon, and served as rabbi for the Temple Beth Israel from 1900 to 1906. He returned to New York and founded the Free Synagogue.
