Scope and Contents

Pen and ink sketch by A. R. Slaymaker depicting scenes of the 1930 Republican State Central Committee convention, 38 x 39.3 cm. In hand lettering at lower left is the text: "Meeting of Republican State Central Committee / Portland Oregon / July 25-26-1930 / From Portland Journal - July 27 - 30." At lower right is a handwritten inscription by the artist, which reads: "To Mr. Harold Warner / compliments / A R Slaymaker / Journal." The sketch was published on the front page of the Oregon Journal newspaper on July 27, 1930, under the headline "Impressions of Republican Nominating Convention - By Slaymaker."

Biographical note

A. R. Slaymaker was an artist for the Oregon Journal newspaper in Portland. He first worked for the Journal from 1909 to 1917, then moved to the Seattle Times before returning to the Journal in 1929. He retired in 1947. (Source: Obituary, Oregon Journal, May 13, 1965).
