These interviews about Gladys L. Randall were conducted by Bethanye McNichol from February 7 to March 7, 1998. Interviewees include Randall’s stepson, Richard S. Randall; her daughter-in-law, Sylvia J. Randall; and the owner of Nicholas Ungar Furs, Horst G. Grimm.

In these interviews, they discuss the life and millinery career of Gladys L. Randall, particularly her work in Portland, Oregon, with Olga Lanphier on the label Olga & Louise.

The collection also includes 9 photocopy photographs, with three additional duplicates, relating to Randall, Lanphier, and their Olga & Louise label. Photographs include images of a fur hat, Randall and Lanphier together, and Randall and Lanphier in their hat shop with sales staff and customers.

Biographical note

Gladys Louise Randall, nee Wilson, was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1901. She began working as a milliner as a teenager. In the 1920s, she moved to the Hollywood, California, area, and continued to work as a milliner. She returned to Portland in 1936, and in the 1940s she began working with Olga Lanphier, creating hats on their label, Olga & Louise. In 1947, she and Richard H. Randall were married. In the 1950s, she ceded the label to Olga Lanphier, and continued a millinery business from her home. She died in 1992.
