Biographical Note
Charles G. "Charlie" North was born in 1876 in Portland, Oregon. At age 18, he was abducted in San Francisco and forced into service on a whaling ship, a practice known as "shanghaiing." North spent more than three years on the ship in the Arctic before escaping. Subsequently, he sued the Pacific Steamship Company for damages, and was awarded $10,000. In 1906, North married Ethel Andross; the couple had two daughters. In 1932, North successfully ran for the office of Multnomah County constable. He was re-elected four times, and had filed paperwork to run for a sixth term when he died in April 1952.
